Rush Mat Tepee, c. 1903
This is a picture of a tepee covered with rush mats. That is specifically why I find it interesting. Most tepees we see are covered with canvas or hides. The image was taken at the Colville Indian Reservation in Washington.
That looks to me like a wigwam, not a tipi. The wigwam was an eastern woodland Indian shelter which used bark or matting. The tipi was a western plains shelter using buffalo hide. http://woodsrunnersdiary.blogspot.com/
No, this is a tepee. A wigwam has a dome shape. It is the structural configuration, not the material that covers the dwelling that determines the classification.
